French Cello Labeled C. A. Miremont fecit Parisus Anno Dni, 18__.
Claude Augustin Miremont (1827 – 1887) is considered one of the greatest violin makers of the second part of the 19th century. His work, especially his cellos, are highly appreciated by musicians, violin makers and collectors.
C. A. Miremont was brought to the attention of cellists by the great cellist Pierre Fournier, who used a very fine sounding example during his career. This well-preserved cello dates from 1892, and has rich, concentrated & powerful tone well suited to solo repertoire.
French violin maker Claude-Augustin Miremont's instruments can rival the instruments of the great J.B. Vuillaume. His craftsmanship is superb and the tone of his instruments is exquisite. Pierre Fournier preferred his Miremont to Italian instruments for most of his career. This masterpiece of Miremont's has a golden-brown varnish and is a handsome example of the maker's work. It's a joy to play and to listen to. We look forward to matching this beautiful cello with its next caretaker.
